Getaway To Kaohsiung by Namewee Won Award

Malaysian talented musician/ singer Namewee has won a fifth award for his Getaway to Kaohsiung music video at the Arpa International Film Festival.

That same video has last won two awards at the 41st Annual Telly Awards last year.

Namewee (his real name is Wee Meng Chee) said this was the fifth award received by the video.

Getaway to Kaohsiung

During the Telly Awards, the video bagged the Gold Winner under the Online — General Music Video category, and Silver Winner under the Television — General Music Video category.

Tourism Malaysia’s video, Discover Breathtaking Malaysia, had won the silver award for Non-Broadcast under the Travel/Tourism category.

Namewee posted on his Facebook page and described it as his best Chinese New Year gift.

“This is the fifth award received by the video. Initially when I did this song, I just wanted to help promote Kaohsiung’s tourism. It did not cross my mind that it would garner such a huge response.”

The music in this video is somewhat different from Namewee’s usual provocative style. Instead it has soothing melody with creative shooting of his journey at the back of a truck passing through some of Kaohsiung’s iconic streetscape. It is simply a beautiful video suitable for the entire family to watch.

Arpa International Film Festival is dedicated to cultivating cultural understanding and global empathy by creating a dynamic forum for international cinema.

Last year, Namewee’s film Babi received nominations at the Berlin International Film Festival, Bangkok International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and the Golden Horse Award.

Andy Lau's Social Media Presence Is A Hit

douyin

Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau has broken record by getting over 50 million followers on Douyin (China’s video-sharing social networking service)in less than a week’s time after opening the account.

Prior to this, Lau had never been active on social media. Not too sure what made him changed his mind recently to open his first Douyin account.

Within 24 hours after setting up the account, Andy Lau was followed by more than 24 million followers! With the rate he is going, he could become one of the most followed individuals on Douyin ever.

Andy Lau had posted five videos since 27th January 2021 and has received a total of 87 million likes.

Andy Lau is one of the old-school superstar who previously said he won’t spend time on online communications. “Only using text creates no warmth, I don’t know how to communicate with others by that means,” he was previously quoted as saying.

So what makes him changes his mind? Just like traditional retails chose to have online shopping platform to survive, it looks like the show business is not spared from the devastation caused by Covid-19. It is not hard to understand that it is now more than before that celebrity needs to have online presence in order to stay relevant and not forgotten by their fans.

斗音

In his 40-year career in showbiz, Andy Lau has acted in more than 160 films, made nearly 80 music records and invested in about 30 film projects.

Eason Chan Is The Most Streamed Artist on Spotify

Canto-pop singer Eason Chan Yik-shun was the most-streamed artist in Hong Kong for the fifth consecutive year, streaming service Spotify revealed this week.

Taiwanese singer-songwriter Jay Chou was second, K-pop giants
BTS
 were third, US singer-songwriter
Taylor Swift
was fourth and in fifth place was Hong Kong singer-songwriter Hins Cheung. Cheung’s album Zhang Jingxuan, It’s Time was the most-streamed album in the city this year.

Jin Shares Sadness Through New Song

Ahead of his 28th birthday on Friday, BTS member Jin shared a surprise with the world on Thursday night when he released the song Abyss, a meaningful tune about his relationship with his art.

Jin wrote Abyss alongside Bumzu – a producer who frequently works with boy band Seventeen – as well as with fellow BTS member RM and long-time collaborator Pdogg.

When he shared the song on the BTS’ Twitter page, he linked to both SoundCloud and a blog post in which he shares his thoughts on the sweet, reflective ballad.

In a letter to
BTS’ fandom, known as Army
, Jin recalled how he recently told a press conference that he felt he could share his feelings of sadness with fans through music, and how this song grew out of him questioning whether he was worthy of congratulations after
BTS hit No 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with

Dynamite

over the summer
.

“To be honest, I recently felt really burnt out. I think it was because I had a lot of thoughts about myself,” he wrote, according to a translation by South Korean portal Soompi. “I was congratulated by many people after reaching No 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, but I wondered if it’s really OK for me to receive something like that.

“There are honestly a lot of people who love music more than me and are better at music than me, so is it OK for me to be feeling this happiness and being congratulated like this? That’s what I thought about, and going further into that made me feel troubled, so I wanted to lay everything down.”

K-pop Song For The Covid-19 Pandemic

Our lives may have been turned upside down this year because of the global Covid-19 pandemic, but K-pop stars have kept releasing new material, including songs that touch on living in the coronavirus era.

Tomorrow X Together: We Lost the Summer

In this sprightly tune from TXT's latest EP, "Minisode1: Blue Hour", out this week, the members sing about the lost summer of 2020, bemoaning the state of the world that kept them from enjoying the season and the missed opportunities for summer love.

"The cafe that I went to has now closed (and how) / I hide my sigh behind this stuffy mask (remaining here) / I hate my face without expression (you know)," members Taehyun and Soobin sing on the track.

McRefugee Movie by Aaron Kwok

The plight of Hong Kong's McRefugees receives unabashedly melodramatic treatment in this humane yet relentlessly bleak movie. Ironically, in a year that has seen the film's theatrical release repeatedly postponed by the coronavirus pandemic, the lives of those homeless people who are used to sleeping at night in 24-hour McDonald's joints have become even more of a nightmare.

Produced by
Soi Cheang Pou-soi, I'm Livin' It premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival in October 2019, before going on to win a Hong Kong Film Award in May for the veteran comedian Cheung Tat-ming, in the best supporting actor category.

Get the latest insights and analysis from our Global Impact newsletter on the big stories originating in China.

The feature-film debut of long-time assistant director Wong Hing-fan is clearly pitched as another showcase for the acting of Aaron Kwok Fu-shing, the Canto-pop star playing a former investment expert who has fallen on hard times. But it is the ensemble cast who are memorable and who will win audiences' hearts.

Kwok plays Bowen, the de facto spiritual leader of a small group who spend their nights in a fast-food restaurant. Too ashamed to reunite with his mother (Nina Paw Hee-ching) and sister (Kathy Wu Jiaxing) since the prison spell that preceded his homelessness, Bowen appears content with life as a vagabond.

It must feel a little like redemption, then, that he also gets to use his street smarts to help out his fellow McRefugees: from a runaway teenager (Zeno Koo Ting-hin) to a talkative caricature artist (Cheung Tat-ming), a single mother in heavy debt (Cya Liu Yase), and an elderly widower who keeps denying his wife's passing (Alex Man Chi-leung).

A story of broken dreams and unfulfilled promises, the screenplay by Ja Poon ( A Beautiful Moment ) rarely misses an opportunity to pile on the misery. A would-be romance between Bowen and Jane (Miriam Yeung Chin-wah), a lounge singer who has carried a torch for him for years, never materialises, reflecting the film's austerity.

While Cheung took the limelight with his win at the Hong Kong Film Awards, I'm Livin' It is a true team effort; under Wong's measured direction, almost every actors leaves an impression. Sentimental, yet realistic for the most part, this film casts a rare spotlight on the Hong Kong underclass, one that hopefully will inspire positive action in their favour.

Nicholas Tse Turns 40

Known for his dramatic stunts on screen, actor Nicholas Tse, who has a net worth of US$139 million, loves to cook, likes straightforward people and might just be the world's next
kung fu star.

Born to veteran actors Patrick Tse and Deborah Li, Nicholas spent most of his childhood in Vancouver and Phoenix, Arizona, where he was in the limelight because of his parents. Holiday photos of him and his sister were often published in magazines, and as a result, Tse would grow comfortable being in the public eye.

Following his parents' footsteps, Tse made his debut in the entertainment industry as a singer but found mainstream success in acting. He is the only actor to have won best new performer (1999), best supporting actor (2010), and best actor (2011) at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

He is a chef and an entrepreneur

Tse started cooking after he saw a TV show explaining how difficult it is to create a souffle or profiterole. "It immediately inspired me to try making them," he told CNN.

He then opened his own bakery, Chef Nic's Cookies, in 2015. Unfortunately, due to the economic downturn caused by anti-government protests and the Covid-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, the store has since closed.

Aside from the bakery, he launched a TV show in 2014 called Chef Nic where he documents his culinary endeavours with famous personalities like Jackie Chan and Fan Bingbing.

He likes it when people keep things simple

Netizens and viewers of the Netflix series J-Style Trip were surprised when Tse said he likes uncomplicated people and cites co-actor Jay Chou and rumoured love Faye Wong as examples. "Among people I know, only Jay and Faye are equally simple-hearted," he said.

Tse owns two properties at Lyndhurst Terrace in Central, Hong Kong. According to Malay Mail, quoting a report from Apple Daily, he had to slash his rental rates. One of his lots is now offered for rent for HK$82,000 (US$10,500) a month; back in 2012 it was rented out for HK$225,000 (US$29,000).

He might be the next kung fu star

Actor and director Donnie Yen thinks Tse has the potential to be a massive kung fu star. This seems apt given Tse's credentials and background: he was trained by Philip Ng, Andy On and Sammo Hung and has two decades' worth of experience acting in action films.

In an episode of America's Next Top Model Season 18, model mentor Miss Jay Alexander and Tse facilitated an action-packed acting challenge to teach a fight sequence to the models. He showed how to do a left and right hook, uppercut, and pin down an opponent, showcasing why he's one of Hong Kong's most respected action stars.

JJ Lin Best Male Singer

Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin bagged his first double win at the 27th Golden Melody Awards last night, including the coveted Best Male Mandarin Singer award, in what is seen as the Chinese equivalent of the Grammy Awards.

The 35-year-old also snagged the Best Composer Award for his hit song "Twilight" at the ceremony in the Taipei Arena.

This is Lin's second Best Male Mandarin Singer award. He won the same award in 2014.

This time round, Lin saw off less well-known contenders Matzka, Ko Chi-Tang, Namewee and Li Jian.

Looking relieved, Lin said on stage that he will "work harder".

Nominated in four categories for his 12th album "From M.E. To Myself", Lin missed out on the Best Album Producer and Best Song of The Year awards.

Taiwan indigenous singer-songwriter Suming Rupi was the night's surprise winner when his song "Don't Give Up" was crowned Best Song of the Year, beating four better-known hits - including Lin's "Twilight", "A Little Luck" from romantic comedy "Our Times", A-mei's "Matriarchy" and indie band Sodagreen's "That Evening It Rained".

Another surprise winner was Taiwanese singer Julia Peng, who was crowned Best Mandarin Female Singer for her album "Darling".

When the 44-year-old veteran went onstage, she was in tears, saying: "I've waited for 20 years... I thought if it isn't A-mei, it will be Tanya Chua. I will continue to make music for the next 20 years."

She beat the hot favourite, Taiwanese pop diva A-mei, Singaporean singer-songwriter Tanya Chua - who failed to clinch her fourth Best Singer award - Peggy Hsu, Su Yun Ying and Xiao Hsia.

Sodagreen was the night's biggest winner, picking up four of the eight awards it was nominated in for its 10th album "Endless Winter". It bagged the awards for Best Mandarin Album, Best Band, Best Album producer and Best Arranger.

Singers, songwriters and composers from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia competed in more than 40 categories at the ceremony, which featured a performances by China-born pianist Lang Lang, A-mei and Hong Kong singer Karen Mok.

Rain Reigned Supreme

It was a wet Saturday night for Korean superstar Rain. Barely 15 minutes into the two-hour concert, the dancer, singer and actor, was already drenched in sweat.

Performing the Malaysian leg of his worldwide Rain: The Squall Tour 2016 at the Arena Of Stars, Genting Highlands last weekend, the buff 33-year-old stormed the stage with a vengeance. Happy to be back, he showed why “Rain’s reign” is far from over despite the K-pop scene being flooded with younger heartthrobs, hungry for global domination.

The Squall Tour was Rain’s first concert tour since completing his compulsory military service in 2013. With seven albums under his belt, he made up for lost time, performing 23 of his biggest hits including Hip Song, Running Away From The Sun, Love Song, Bad Guy, It’s Raining, and of course, Rainism!

Hot on the heels of the tour which kicked off last November in China, his latest Korean drama series, Please Come Back, Mister, began airing in February. Before stopping by here, Rain showered fans in Changsha, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Hong Kong, with some hip-thrusting, crotch-grabbing, love.

His energetic moves, while not as fluid as the King of Pop’s, were a less-than-subtle ode to his idol, Michael Jackson. The MJ influence – think knee pads, white jacket and hat – was also noted in the costumes.

Appearing initially in an anatomy-inspired white and silver suit, Rain looked more comfortable dancing in his white tank top for most of the show. Five costume changes through the night saw him taking on different roles, including a dapper-looking gentleman in a black tailored suit, a bad boy in a leather jacket and aviator shades, and a cool cat clad in matching gold-sequinned sleeveless, cap and boots. He needn’t have bothered because judging from the screams and squeals, the tank top was the obvious fan favourite.

Don’t let the cute act fool you, under that suit is one macho physique.

Sadly, unlike their counterparts, his Malaysian fans were deprived of a shirtless show. The much-anticipated water effect of Rain, singing in the rain – was also missing but I suspect the crowd was more upset at having to settle for the modest view of him in a singlet.

Crowned one of Time magazine’s most influential people in the world in 2006, Rain sure knows how to milk his assets. Wagging his finger and apologising for raining on their parade, he told the packed arena that going shirtless was a “no-no”. But, that didn’t stop him from teasing them throughout the night. After close to an hour of him toying with his jacket and their eagerness, the wait finally paid off – well, almost.

The big moment came at 9.45pm, when clad in a simple black tee, he ripped the collar mid-song, revealing perfect pecs and a chiselled chest. The only sight of him shirtless was in the videos flashing on screen. But that was enough to invite thunderous claps and adoring whistles from an audience that represented every generation.

The man is a consummate performer. With the show starting only 20 minutes later than scheduled, Rain is among the more punctual and hardworking acts to have landed here. A global star no doubt, but the man had no qualms walking down from the stage to high-five the lucky ones up front.

While the costumes were glam and the backdrop jaw-dropping with its flashing images of everything from cutesy childhood photos to stormy skies and angry seas, it was his performance that stood out the most. Like a squall sweeping through, Rain’s energy, charisma and powerful vocals are why he’s Asia’s most recognisable name. Heck, even his dancers had trouble keeping up!

Michelle Reis' assistant thanks Leon Lai for saving her life 22 years ago

Recently, there was a woman named Queenie Mok, who claimed to be Michelle Reis’ ex-assistant, who called the Hong Kong media to thank Leon Lai for saving her life 22 years ago.

Queenie said that she travelled to Beijing with Michelle and Leon to film a movie 22 years, and one day, she suddenly had a miscarriage. Leon immediately rushed her to a hospital and even paid for the hospitalisation fees.

According to Asian Pop News, Queenie said, “I am very grateful to him. He saved my life. They were filming that day, and I had a miscarriage in the midnight. He immediately arranged with the hotel manager to send me to a hospital. He is a very nice man.”

Queenie also said that her husband was working in Hong Kong at that time, and as his travel permit had expired, he was not able to come to Beijing.

Leon went to the extent of helping to resolve her husband’s travel permit, and the next day, her husband was able to visit her in Beijing.

Queenie hoped to thank Leon privately. As she is not able to contact Leon, she hopes that Leon will contact her after reading the report.

After the news surfaced, Leon responded through a spokesperson, “I will remember if I harm someone. I will not remember if I help someone, but I definitely did not harm anyone, because I don’t remember.”
