Goh Chok Tong Stays Positive

Former Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong noted on social media that “Every day is a bonus,” despite suffering from radiation dermatitis from the treatment sessions that he finished last week.

Radiation dermatitis, or radiation rash or burns, is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment radiotherapy.

It happens when the outer layers of a person’s skin is affected by radiation therapy.

About 95 per cent of those who undergo radiation therapy experience some form of dermatitis, such as redness, skin dryness, or skin peeling.

Most of these symptoms can be treated at home with skin creams applied onto affected areas for soothing effect.

The 79-year-old Mr Goh continue to live life positively, saying that he will get the Covid vaccine when his turn comes.

Goh Chok Tong is also looking forward to the release of the second part of his authorised biography, “Standing Tall.” His intention is to launch the book in late April or early May of this year, just in time for his 80th birthday.

The former Prime Minister also wrote that the book has been read by PM Lee Hsien Loong and another friend, who described it as “enjoyable.”

The first volume of his biography, ‘Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story’, was released late in 2019 and covered his life until he became Singapore’s second Prime Minister in 1990.

The second volume is expected to cover the years of his premiership from 1990 to 2004.

Goh Chok Tong had a big shoe to fill in when he took over from the legendary Lee Kuan Yew. Most didn’t expect him to do well especially when they use Lee Kuan Yew as the benchmark. Goh Chok Tong would went on to prove his critics wrong by leading Singapore for 14 years through recessions, terrorist attacks, electoral setbacks and the epidemic of a virus.

Uncle Roger Clarifies His Position

Internet celebrity Uncle Roger recently got himself into trouble after his video featured another YouTube star who has been vocal in his criticism of the Chinese government. Uncle Roger subsequently remove the video from the internet.

Critics had accused Uncle Roger – he is a Malaysian comedian and his real name is Nigel Ng, of bowing down to pressure from China last week after a video he made with vlogger Mike Chen from the Strictly Dumpling channel was removed from his YouTube channel.

The video with Mike Chen that got Uncle Roger into trouble.

In a new video posted to YouTube on January 16, Uncle Roger clarified: "I hate drama ... I just want to make funny vigeos (he means videos).”

"I don't want to be involved in anything else - no politics, no drama. Uncle Roger love making people laugh. It's about entertaining people, no matter where they come from, and respecting everyone's culture.”

"For the record, Uncle Roger make zero dollars from Chinese social media so to see my nieces and nephews say I like RMB more than MSG really break Uncle Roger’s heart." RMB is an acronym for renminbi, China's currency - also called the yuan.

Uncle Roger also addressed his critics on Instagram, posting: "I'm not bowing down to anyone. Especially not to all the hate comments I'm getting. So if you're thinking of sending me nasty things, save your time and just hit the unfollow button."

The whole drama began last week when a video entitled "Uncle Roger Reviews Ugliest Dumpling Ever" was removed by Uncle Roger himself, who said was not aware of Mike Chen's political leanings nor his previous criticism about the Chinese government when he collaborated with the food vlogger. He admitted on Weibo - China's Twitter - that the video had created a "bad social impact".

"My staff and I would like to express our sincerest apologies to everyone," Nigel Ng said. "Considering the seriousness of this issue and the negative impact of the video itself, we discussed internally and decided to take it down from all platforms."

Singaporean Shows You His Fountain Of Youth

Chuando Tan, a photographer from Singapore who became internet celebrity overnight after he posted his own photos on social media platform. Chuando was born in 1967, he is 54 years old this year but he looks more like in his 30s!

Chuando Tan used to work as a model in the 1980s and even attempted to be a pop singer in the ’90s. Unfortunately his career in singing wasn’t successful. Tan then decided to switch his career to photography.

Chuando Tan started an Instagram account and posted several photos of himself sharing his thoughts in captions. It soon proved to be working and his presence online gaining traction. Unsurprisingly, most of his followers are shocked to see how young he looks at his age and wanted to know his secrets.

Tan believes strongly that we are what we eat and believes that our health and appearance depend on 70% diet and 30% on exercise. He eats 6 hard boiled eggs for breakfast with only 2 yolks (due to cholesterol). He drinks a glass of milk and sometimes adds avocado with berries to his breakfast. This is a good amount of protein to start the day.

Apart from eggs, he eats chicken with rice, grilled vegetables, and fish soup during the day. The photographer also avoids coffee and tea but drinks a lot of water. He doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink alcohol, and usually eats salad for dinner.

On physical exercise, Chuando Tan does strength training 4 times a week, spending no more than 30 minutes on this activity. He will then follow through with cardio training. He also tries to swim every day for about an hour.

Tan says, “I have tried many different jobs and stopped at what I really like. I love people, love communication, love to set up a photo shoot, and love to take photos. If you do what you don’t like, then you’ll be feeling bad and, of course, it won’t strengthen your health.”

Another secret he shared was his sleeping schedule. Chuando Tan goes to bed every night before 11 PM and wakes up early in the morning. In order to get good sleep, he stops eating 5-6 hours before going to bed.

Learning from Chuando Tan, we realize that the secret to youth are: have passion in your work, a healthy diet, enough quality sleep, and discipline daily exercises.

Aliff Ali Khan Covid-19 Positive

Another celebrity down with Covid-19. This time is the Indonesia-based Malaysian-born actor Aliff Ali Khan who is reported to be in a critical condition.

Aliff has been receiving treatment at Wisma Atlet Hospital in Jakarta.

Aliff is the younger brother of Indonesia-based Miller Khan, who recently won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA) 2020.

Aliff’s lawyer Asgar Sjarfi was quoted as saying that the artist has not shown any encouraging signs although he has been receiving treatment for the past three weeks.

Asgar also noted that Aliff is currently on a ventilator.

“His condition worsened after three weeks of isolation at Wisma Atlet Hospital.

“At the same time, Aliff faced pressure due to the divorce case process with his ex-wife Aska Ongi which is still ongoing,” he added.

Although Asgar was in touch with Aliff during the first week of his admission to the hospital, he said now that the actor no longer replies messages.

Visitors are not allowed at the hospital.

Aliff followed his brother’s footsteps and made the move to Indonesia to pursue his acting career.

Among the Indonesian-produced films that Aliff starred in is Heart 2 Heart as well as popular drama series Aisyah Putri The Series: Jilbab In Love .

Where Is Jack Ma?

Mystery surrounds Chinese billionaire and Alibaba founder Jack Ma’s whereabouts, after he missed an appearance on a TV talent show he founded back in November, and hasn’t been seen since.

An Alibaba spokesperson told the Financial Times that Ma was unable to take part on the judging panel due to a scheduling conflict, but the billionaire’s silence has interesting timing.

Jack Ma is the founder of tech giant Alibaba, and is worth an estimated US$51 billion (AU$66.4 billion).

He also founded Ant Group, formerly known as Ant Financial and Alipay, an affiliate company of the Alibaba Group. Alipay is China’s largest digital payments platform.

But it’s Ma’s rags-to-riches back story that has shot him to fame: he was a broke English teacher until someone showed him the internet on a trip to the US in the 1990s.

In 1999, he convinced his friends to give him US$60,000 to start a new business in China, and Alibaba was born from his bedroom in Hangzhou, starting a retail revolution with it.

After appearing in movies, performing on stage donning a rockstar costume and speaking at countless conferences, he’s seen as China’s flamboyant poster boy for tech.

At the Bund Summit in Shanghai on 24 October, Ma criticised the lawmakers that enforce global financial regulations, the Basel Accords, saying they were like “an old people’s club”.

According to The Times, Ma, a Communist Party member, said: “The Basel Accords are like an old people’s club… we can’t use yesterday’s methods to regulate the future”.

The billionaire said the Basel Accords framework stifled opportunities for young people and developing nations, and that regulatory rules suppressed innovation.

Before the summit, Ant Group was preparing for a US$37 billion initial public offering (IPO), and would have valued the company at more than US$300 billion.

The IPO would have boosted Ma’s net worth even further, and cemented his position as the nation’s richest man.

After the summit, things changed.

China cracked down on regulations, smothering Ant Group’s IPO and triggered a US$140 billion (17 per cent) decline in the market value of Ma’s Alibaba.’

The Shanghai Stock Exchange said Ant had reported “significant issues such as the changes in financial technology regulatory environment”.

In late December, Chinese authorities launched an anti-monopoly investigation into Alibaba, and told Ant Group to restructure its operations.

Ma was then called in by regulators for investigation, and his vanished from the public eye ever since.

And it’s likely not a coincidence, the professor of finance at Hong Kong University, Chen Zhiwu, told the Financial Times.

“The fintech clean-up considerations would not have been an issue [for the authorities].

“But everything changed after the speech... Xinhua News agency publicly attacked Ma,” he said. 

Yes. Ma is not the only Chinese businessman to disappear from the public eye after battling with regulators.

In 2020, Xu Zhangrun, a law professor, and Zhang Xuehzong, a human rights lawyer, were reportedly arrested over criticising the Communist Party for its response to the pandemic.

Retired real-estate tycoon Ren Zhiqiang also reportedly disappeared for criticising the Communist Party’s COVID response, and was later sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Ma has been out of public view since November, when he failed to make an appearance at his own talent show, Africa’s Business Heroes.

Ma was supposed to be on the judging panel, but was replaced by an Alibaba executive in the final. His picture was also removed from the website.

The billionaire’s last tweet was on 10 October in 2020.

Stephen Chow Won Court Case

The Hong Kong court has thrown out a suit from the ex-girlfriend of comedian and director Stephen Chow, who accused him of failing to pay her commission totalling more than HK$70 million (RM37 million) from the sale of their luxury home.

Quoting a judgement released by the city state's High Court yesterday, Singapore portal The Straits Times reported that the presiding judge had instead ordered Alice Yu to pay cost.

Yu, 49, who split up with Chow in 2010, had testified in court in November that she and Chow had reached a verbal agreement on the commission on Christmas Eve in 2002.

He was reported to have had suggested giving her a bicycle as a gift. But she then proposed a 10 per cent commission on their investments, including three luxury units with five parking spaces and projects under his investment fund.

Taking the stand during the trial, the 58-year-old Chow admitted in court to making the promise, but he said they were merely “sweet words” during their 13-year courtship.

Yu had insisted that Chow was then both her boyfriend and business partner, with the verbal agreement hence a business contract and legally enforceable, or Chow would not have shared some investments profits with her after their break-up.

Chow, who directed hits like Kung Fu Hustle (2004), CJ7 (2008) and The Mermaid (2016), however, said the money was a gift to her with no other motives.

While it was unclear how much Yu had to pay for costs, the judge ruled yesterday that Yu did not act as an agent for the properties and did not facilitate Chow's investments.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily reported Chow's lawyer Anthony Siu saying the actor hoped the matter would end with the judgement.

He also wished Hongkongers Merry Christmas on behalf of Chow.
